DESCRIPTION:Honoring the Van Damme Family from Belgium \nPlease join us on Sunday\, May 5\, at 2 pm as we honor the Van Damme Family from Belgium. This year we will welcome Laurette and Luc Matthijs as we honor their family\, as well as Adas Israel member Hirsch Grunstein\, who was given sanctuary by the Van Damme family in Belgium during World War II. We hope you can join us for this moving ceremony\, which will include musical excerpts from the Missing Voices project\, featuring soprano Lily Arbisser and French-Romanian pianist Dimitri Malignan\, and highlighting works of composers who were victims of the Holocaust. \nAlice Van Damme\, at 22\, witnessed an attack on Jews near Antwerp’s railway station. Amid the chaos\, she heard of Dr. Content\, who could aid Jews. Seeking to help\, she connected with Mrs. Sobolski\, taking in her children and aiding others. With a teacher’s help\, she sheltered Hirsch and Salomon Grunstein. Alice’s family\, active in the resistance\, aided Jews\, even after arrests. Recognized by Yad Vashem in 1996\, the Van Damme family were named Righteous Among the Nations for their courageous actions. \nProgram will include acclaimed French-Romanian pianist Dimitri Malignan bringing his “Missing Voices” project\, dedicated to Jewish composers who were persecuted in the Shoah. Dimitri collaborates with American soprano Lily Arbisser\, known to the Adas community from the years she sang in the quartet for our High Holy Days. Dimitri and Lily will perform music by Mieczysław Weinberg\, Sim Gokkes\, Henriëtte Bosmans\, Józef Koffler\, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco\, and Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman.

Caryn also serves as the Stakeholder Lead for the Customer Experience Executive Order that was issued to improve the experience of accessing Federal benefits and services. In this capacity\, Caryn works on improving the experience of navigating health and social services\, specifically for low-income individuals when giving birth. \n Caryn previously served in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation as a social science analyst in the office of health policy\, assisting with Medicaid\, CHIP\, and health reform research and policy issues. Before coming to the Department of Health and Human Services\, Caryn focused on health reform implementation and Medicaid and CHIP policy at Booz Allen Hamilton\, National Governors Association\, and the Kaiser Family Foundation.  \nCaryn earned a Master in Public Policy degree from the Harvard Kennedy School and a Bachelors degree from Emory University.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for Inclusion Celebration Shabbat with Guest Speaker Gabi Conecker. \nGabi Conecker\, MPH is mother to 11 year old Elliott\, who has a severe form of SCN8A-DEE. She is Executive Director and Co-Founder of Decoding Development Epilepsies\, which houses a number of collaborative efforts aimed at improving care\, quality of life and treatments for those with rare Epilepsies. In 2014\, when confronted with a diagnosis that came with no answers for her child\, she co-founded Wishes for Elliott to advance research into her son’s newly discovered genetic disorder. Working collaboratively\, she joined efforts with other advocates to transition this work into the International SCN8A Alliance\, which works globally to coordinate efforts in order to better understand and treat SCN8A disorders. Noting a gap in support and education for families like hers\, who have children severely affected by developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs)\, she also co-founded DEE-P Connections – a partnership of 40+ patient advocacy groups working to empower caregivers with critical information and improve outcomes for those most severely affected by DEEs. One of the most exciting research efforts of DEE-P Connections is The Inchstone Project\, an effort to advance tools able to capture the small but cherished “inchstones\,” not milestones\, of those most severely affected in both clinical care and relatively short clinical trials. She is also co-Founder of the Epilepsies Action Network\, a collaborative effort to increase the understanding of and federal funding for the epilepsies on the Hill.
