SUMMARY:MakomDC- Mendelson Family Scholar Series- Dr. Sarah Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sarah Wolf \n“The Stories that Shaped the Beit Midrash” \nShabbat Afternoon\, February 7th at 1pm \nThe yeshiva is central to how we think about “serious” Jewish learning. Yet this format for study was not always part of Jewish life. The yeshiva\, or rabbinic academy\, emerged at a specific time and place\, in the Persian Empire at the close of the Talmudic period. And\, as we will learn\, stories and storytelling were at the heart of its rise. The talk will primarily focus on the connection between stories and study at the time of the Talmud\, but we will also explore the lasting cultural legacy of the rabbinic academy and consider the role of stories in forging new paths for Jewish study culture today. \nDr. Sarah Wolf is Assistant Professor of Talmud and Rabbinics at the Jewish Theological Seminary. She teaches\, writes\, and speaks about emotion\, law\, gender\, community\, and the imaginary in rabbinic texts. She lives in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.

SUMMARY:MakomDC: The Necessity of Narrative in Halakhic Decision Making with Rabbi Aaron Alexander
DESCRIPTION:The Necessity of Narrative in Halakhic Decision Making \nShabbat afternoons Dec 6th\, Feb 14th\, March 28th \nIf a Jewish Legal (halakhic) decision is made in the forest with nobody present\, did it actually happen? Maybe. The reality is that written law–case-law (responsa) and codes–significantly depend on the very human stories that animates both the unique questions\, and idiosyncratic responses. In this series we’ll explore some critical halakhic decisions (responsa\, mostly) in which the stories behind the questions influenced the direction of the rabbinic decisor. (Texts provided in Hebrew & English\, all are welcome!) \nFebruary 14th: Test Cases—Sociological Identity Shifts That Stretched Halakhah in Post-Enlightenment Germany. Join Rabbi Alexander in the Biran Beit Midrash at 1:00pm to explore how modernity upended traditional Jewish life in Germany\, and created a genre of Responsa Literature (Questions/Answers) that attempted to hold the community together from within classic halakhic principles. Sources provided in original and english\, all are welcome!

SUMMARY:Understanding Addiction & Recovery in a Jewish Context: Session 3
DESCRIPTION:A Jewish Approach to Mental Health \nExploring Mental Health Issues through Jewish Wisdom\, Spirit\, and Community \nMental health is a cornerstone for wellbeing – for individuals\, for families\, and for the community at large. Mental health is not only a medical issue but also a spiritual one. Jewish tradition teaches that caring for one’s mind is part of caring for one’s soul. And caring for others and their mental health is a mitzvah. \nJoin us for thoughtful exploration of mental health issues through a Jewish lens. Together we will unpack how Jewish tradition understands emotional wellbeing – from biblical struggles with despair to contemporary approaches rooted in spirituality and community. Hear from rabbis\, mental health professionals\, and community members as we discuss how Jewish wisdom can support emotional wellbeing. Multiple sessions are planned to allow a deeper dive into knowledge and healing. Participants may choose to attend all or some of these sessions. \nSESSION #1 – Insights: What Judaism Teaches Us About Mental Wellness and Health \nOn zoom with Rabbi Sarah Krinsky & Dr. Ali Weisbrott\, LICSW \nJanuary 23\, 2026\, 11:00am – 12:00pm \nOur Jewish traditions and values emphasize healing both physical and mental health.  Where in the Torah do we find examples of this?  What are our Jewish teachings about promoting mental health?  How do Jewish values advance the healing process?    \nSESSION #2 – Erasing the Stigma of Mental Health Issues \nOn zoom with Rabbi Anina Dassa & Natalie Merker Rose \nFebruary 13\, 2026\, 11:00am-12:00pm \nHow does Judaism help to erase the stigma of mental health issues and to find needed help for yourself and others?  Why do we easily ask for help when we have a medical issue but feel hesitant\, scared\, or embarrassed when we have an emotional issue?  This session will explore how to find tools to ask questions and find solutions about total wellbeing. \nSESSION #3—Understaning Addiction & Recovery in a Jewish Context \nOn zoom with Rabbi Lauren Holtzblatt & Josh Fingerhut\, LMFT \nFebruary 27\, 2026\, 11:00am-12:00pm \nWith the goal of building communal fluency around addiction and normalize open\, stigma-free conversations across different circles\, and strengthen connections between Adas programs\, we invite you to join us. This session is intended to raise community awareness about addiction and recovery within a Jewish framework\, encouraging compassionate dialogue and attempting to remove the stigma. The program aims to offer language and understanding that promote dignity and support. \nSESSION #4 – Hands-On Workshop: The Mitzvah of Caring For Oneself and Others \nIn person\, with Rabbi Krinsky & Rabbi Yolkut\, Adas Israel Congregation \nSunday\, March 8th\, 2026\, 10:00 am-11:30am – Beit Midrash & Mikveh \nHesed is focused on the mitzvah of caring for others.  But what about caring for ourselves?   This\, too\, is an important mitzvah.  Mental health and physical health are connected – our body and mind are a complete package.   This session will be in person and will take a deeper dive into how to seek mental health help from professionals and from ourselves. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Fear No Pharaoh: American Jews & the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:In 1860\, there were 150\,000 Jews living in the United States. How did this small minority\, mostly recent immigrants\, react to the fierce national debate over slavery? During his virtual visit\, Richard Kreitner\, author of Fear No Pharaoh: American Jews\, the Civil War\, and the Fight to End Slavery\, will introduce noteworthy Jewish individuals who opposed slavery\, defended it\, or remained silent. The case of those who opted to stay silent raises some uncomfortable questions.  Would we have been more courageous in their circumstances? What is the cost of political courage in our own time? \nRegister

SUMMARY:Dare to Imagine a Free Iran. It's Time.
DESCRIPTION:Tens of thousands have been killed by the regime’s security forces. And still\, the Iranian people march. \nNot because they are reckless\, but because they are resolute. They march because liberty is not an abstract idea to them. It is the very air they breathe. \nWhy have leftists and feminists\, who once stood far from even the notion of monarchy\, publicly united behind Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi as a transitional opposition figure? \nWhy are lifelong pacifists now speaking the unspeakable\, arguing that the world may need to confront the Islamic Republic with force? \nWhat breaks a society so profoundly\, so deeply\, and so painfully that even its gentlest voices begin to speak in the language of urgency? \nKhosro Isfahani will explore these questions and more through a tapestry of personal witness and national history. \nKhosro was born and raised in Tehran\, where he lived for over three decades\, working as a journalist and frontline human rights defender until 2021. He infiltrated secretive missile facilities. He smuggled classified documents beyond the regime’s reach. He delivered aid quietly to communities placed deliberately in harm’s way. \nThose choices carried consequences: interrogations\, threats\, surveillance\, and finally exile. \nBut exile did not silence him. \nOver seventeen years reporting on Iran’s political and human landscape\, Khosro has transformed lived experience into disciplined research and strategic advocacy: he found Hashem and His tribe — not as a metaphor\, but an anchor. Today\, he serves as Research Director at the National Union for Democracy in Iran (NUFDI)\, documenting abuses and articulating a pathway toward a democratic transition. \nThis is not merely a lecture about geopolitics. It is a call to moral imagination… to dare and imagine a free Iran. And to also recognize that the time for imagining alone has passed.

SUMMARY:MakomDC: The Necessity of Narrative in Halakhic Decision Making with Rabbi Aaron Alexander - Passover Test Case: When Matzah Harms
\nMarch 28th: The Necessity of Narrative in Halakhic Decision Making: Passover Test Case–When Matzah Harms – In this pre-Passover session\, we’ll study together a Jewish legal response to questions that circle around health and halakhah. What happens when people’s lives don’t fit into the clean legal boxes? This will also give us a chance to explore and discuss the big mitzvot of Passover. Texts will be provided in English and the original. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Primer for the 2026 Israeli Elections - Mechanisms and Procedures of the Israeli Electoral System with Natan Guttman
DESCRIPTION:PRIMER FOR THE 2026 ISRAELI ELECTIONS – MECHANISMS AND PROCEDURES OF THE ISRAELI ELECTORAL SYSTEM WITH NATAN GUTTMAN – EMINENT ISRAELI REPORTER BASED IN DC \nNatan Guttman has been  reporting from Washington\, DC for the past two decades. Since 2007 he has been the US correspondent for Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation – KAN 11. Natan was Haaretz’s Washington Bureau Chief from 2001 – 2005\, and Features Editor prior to that. From 1996 – 1999 he served as the Chief Editor at the Israel Broadcasting Authority’s Mabat Evening News.   He is the former Washington Bureau Chief of the Forward.   Natan served as a Diplomatic correspondent for IDF Radio for three years. He was born in Canada and grew up in Israel. He is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition to appearing very regularly on Israel Channel 11\, Natan Guttman is currently a Moment Institute senior fellow. \n\nThe 2026 elections in Israel are its most important ones in several decades\, and perhaps since 1948. Jews in the US will be following the election campaigns and results with heightened expectations. Each of us may be favoring one party or leader. But are we sufficiently familiar with how the system works? This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of the Israeli parliamentary system: \n– When are elections called? \n– How does a government fall? \n– The roles of public and private financing of campaigns \n– The mechanisms for building ruling coalitions \n– The role of primaries and the forming of party slates \n– Who appoints cabinet ministers? \n– The differences between national and municipal elections \n– The President’s role in choosing a leader to form a governing majority
